Mindful Compassionate Dialogue Therapy (MCDT)
Relationship Competencies Training
This is a revolution in therapy!
This 6 month MCDT therapist training program is a gateway to cultivating your own skill and capacity to ground in love, care, and power-with dynamics. From this consciousness and with the support of the MCDT system, you will learn how to guide your clients on a clear path to thriving in relationships.
There is a map to thriving relationships, we want you and your clients to have it!
What is MCD Therapy?
The system of MCD is a scaffolding that allows individuals and couples to take the reins of their healing process. This approach is grounded in the life-serving intention which is expressed through love, care, & power-with dynamics in relationship. Clients are empowered with a detailed and practical map for creating thriving relationships. MCD offers nine foundations for well-being and building an integrated sense of self. In addition, it articulates 12 relationship competencies for loving & collaborative connections. Once clients have the capacity to engage with these relationship competencies they will have greater capacity to thrive in life and love!
There are clients seeking this work and we look forward to growing the list of practitioners to refer them to!
MCD Therapy can be applied with both couples and individuals. The learning is through the lens of couples therapy.
How will you & your work be changed?
Build confidence in relationship work:
Learn concrete skills and healing processes that inform/support every moment of a couples session. Rooted in both psychodynamic and behavioral approaches.
Center the heart:
While words can be a starting point, the MCD system acts as a guiding hand, helping you and your clients transition from the head to the heart, fostering deeper connections. This both a top down and bottom up approach.
Prevent burn out:
Enjoy sessions oriented around love and care while empowering clients to take an active role in their healing journey. They do the heavy lifting of tending to their own connection as they develop deeper awareness of their own psyche & skills.
Co-create your sessions:
Adopt a therapeutic approach that reduces power imbalances and barriers to knowledge, fosters a more client-centered experience, and empowers clients by helping them understand their own skills, psyche, and resources.
Enjoy live experiential learning!
Step away from the computer and books, and dive into the real-world experience of the work! Practice skills with your cohort while receiving live mentorship and coaching.
Build community:
This training emphasizes collaborative learning and community building through use of the MCD system and consciousness. Be witnessed, known, supported, & celebrated in your growth and learning.
What is included in this training?
Together we will create a safe and supportive space for you to grow personally and professionally.

Prior to our first in person gathering as a cohort you will be asked to engage in self-paced learning via pre-recorded introductory videos for the 12 relationship competencies and the 9 foundations. You will be invited to complete these videos with a study buddy so that you can engage in the exercises offered. If you find you want to deepen your learning, you will have access to more in-depth self-paced courses on these topics.
This is approximately 38.5 hours of educational material.
We will be there to offer support and guidance as you enter into this first part of our program.

We will be meeting one weekend a month for six months in Southeast Portland, Oregon.
Experiential learning of MCD skills with clients. (16hr Friday and Saturday)
Learn concrete skills for how to guide an MCDT session through experiential practices with your colleagues, role-plays, coaching, and individual support and mentorship.
Learn bottom up and top down approaches as you practice integrating two relationship competencies as a therapist for use in practice. These two competencies will be integrated through the five dimensions of an MCDT session as described below.
All that we do together will include care for and support of your own personhood and how you are living the consciousness and skills as well as how you transmit them to clients.
-
You will have the opportunity to build a community of practice with your peers. Peer support pods will have an opportunity to meet once a month to practice skills and support each other in engaging from within the MCD consciousness.
-
You will have an abundance of supportive materials for each of the 12 relationship competencies! As we proceed through the six months, you will be provided with informational materials, articles, worksheets, and practice exercises that can be immediately incorporated into your practice and offered to your clients.

How are so many people learning about MCD? Elia Paz Lowe-Chardé, the founder of MCD & Wise Heart has been offering in person and online trainings for 20 years. She teaches MCD in Spanish in South America and Spain. Elia has offered a weekly publication called the Connection Gem for 15 years and in the last couple of years began offering a podcast which has now has over 30,000 listens. Awareness of MCD is rapidly growing and there are now additional staff teaching MCD courses around the world.

We envision and will support a community of practice with fellow MCDT trained therapists for continued integration of the principles, techniques, & system of MCD in couples sessions. This community of practice may include peer practice groups, practice groups with mentorship, individual mentorship, and advanced training sessions. The community may collaborate to develop creative strategies to meet needs that are not included in the list above.
Founding Community Opportunity:
Ava & Elia have been actively tending to and cultivating MCD Therapy since 2020. We are excited to share this work with you and to invite you into the MCD community. Upon completion of this training, we look forward to connecting with practitioners who are interested in contributing to the continued development and teaching of MCD therapy. We see this expanding greatly in the years to come!
The Guiding Principle of MCDT:
The Life-Serving Intention to connect and focus on present moment experience is central to MCDT, because this is where a powerful paradigm shift occurs. This shift is learning to trust the truth that when we attain a particular quality of connection within ourselves and with another, we naturally want to engage with generosity, creativity, and consideration of all needs present in a given situation.
Our Life-serving intention is expressed as love, care, & power-with dynamics
-
The MCD system of transformation and relating is only useful to the extent that we are occupying a deep confidence that caring for the quality of connection opens the door to a thriving life. Our Life-serving Intention brings us into resonance with the truth that at the depth of our being we are intimately connected in the web of life and on a path of realizing that connection ever more fully. At our core humans have the capacity for compassion, curiosity, and collaboration. From the Life-serving Intention, we serve and respond to life in whatever the present moment calls for with greater access to skill, compassion, wisdom, & agency.
In other terms, we can say that we are expressing from a consciousness of connection. This is what we are dedicated to tracking first and foremost: the quality of connection with ourselves, in relationship with others moment by moment, and with life.

MCDT offers a comprehensive system for transformation. Both clients and therapists work within a shared understanding of a path toward thriving in relationship. Together you will assess for and celebrate strengths and build a shared understanding and inspiration for growth and transformation.
From our perspective, therapy alone is limited. We see the need for returning to a greater capacity to connect and build interdependent relationships within the larger community context. We were not meant as humans to do this alone! This training holds central the importance of growing, learning, and transforming within a community. With personal growth and couples work as an entry point, we intend to support each other and our clients in moving from the isolation that is so common to interdependence and connections.
-
Counselors, psychotherapists, psychologists, and social workers who value empowering themselves and their clients with the awareness and skills to cultivate thriving relationships.
Practitioners who value experiential learning and recognize that their own change process is essential to becoming an effective relationship counselor. And who are ready and excited about the idea of developing greater skill in challenging moments of connection.
Practitioners who value the wisdom that comes from being centered in an expansive perspective of love, care, & power-with.
Practitioners would like to be a founding member of the MCD Therapy community!
-
While this training is designed for couple’s counselors, it is also supportive for individuals & couples, who have therapeutic goals oriented around relationships.
MCDT is valued by clients who are seeking hope and clarity about a path towards thriving in relationships. Clients who are interested in deepening their own internal capacity to access a more expansive state of love, care, and power-with in relationship will find the skills and practices to be supportive in living a life in alignment with these values.
I, Ava, have found that clients who were not familiar with MCDT before arriving at their consultation are frequently inspired and leave with more hope about therapy. The clarity of the MCD map and how they will be integrated into sessions offers a practical and concrete way forward.
-
You will be able to track and name the cycle of tragic strategies in which couples get caught and the core needs in that cycle that require more attention along with new ways to meet those needs.
You will have increased capacity in helping a couple stay focused and move through a complete dialogue in a session while staying connected to themselves and each other with increased regulation, security, and healthy differentiation.
You will have access to materials that support you and your clients in the assessment process and in developing practices for growth in and out of the therapeutic setting.
You will be prepared to teach couples essential relationship skills and to provide experiential therapeutic approaches to support the integration of this learning.
You will have an increased integration of a consciousness of connection and thriving that will foster an embodied expression of this work from within the seat of the therapist.
You will become an MCD Trained Therapist and have the opportunity to continue developing through phase 2 & 3 of the MCDT Certification Process.
-
The MCDT Certification program is a gateway to cultivating your own skill and capacity to live in thriving relationships grounded in the consciousness of love, care, and power-with dynamics. It will help you cultivate an approach to therapy that supports you in modeling MCD consciousness while guiding your clients on a clear path of developing an integrated sense of self and thriving relationships.
(Note: The certification process as outlined below is a living process. This is the criteria for the 2026 cohort, we anticipate this process will continue to develop to meet students and clients needs in the years to come.)
Phase 1: Complete the MCDT Relationship Competencies Training
Upon completion of phase 1 you are eligible to join the registry of MCDT Trained Therapists and to advertise yourself and an MCDT Trained Therapist.
The emphasis in phase 1 of the MCDT training will be on the integration of the 12 relationship competencies, application of the 5 dimensions of a session, cultivation and embodiment of the life-serving Intention, and an introduction to the foundations.
Phase 2: Enter Community of Practice
(Those not seeking certification may still enter Phase 2.)
Enter into a community of practice with fellow MCDT trained therapists for continuing practice and integration of the principles, techniques, & system of MCD in couples sessions. This community of practice may include peer practice groups, practice groups with mentorship, individual mentorship, and advanced training sessions. The community of practice may develop creative strategies to meet needs that are not included in the list above.
The intention of phase 2 of certification is to:
Deepen your confidence to anchor the consciousness and skills in challenging and varied sessions.
Experience the map of MCD as an inner living guide for your life.
Develop a fluency in how you share this work with your clients and refine the subtleties of how you provide supportive interventions.
Phase 3: Certification
Upon completion of phase 3 you will be a Certified MCDT Therapist.
Our intention in offering a full certification phase is to support practitioners in cultivating the consciousness and skills to provide a predictably high level of application of MCDT with clients.
Phase 3 will be completed in a manner that meets both the needs of the trainers and of the student. The trainer and student will engage in needs-based negotiation as they seek to live the consciousness and skills of MCD within their relationship.
Certification processes in educational institutions have often been overseen from a one directional power-over strategy that has resulted in deep pain and even trauma for students whose diverse needs, wisdom, and values were out of alignment with the certification process. We hold an intention to enter a collaborative process to meet the needs of the trainer and the therapist seeking certification. We look forward to hearing from you, learning about your needs in the certification process, and collaborating together to find a strategy that is mutually satisfying.
Upon certification the MCDT certified therapist will demonstrate:
The capacity to access and manage sessions from a state of loving presence in alignment with the live-serving intention.
Competence in tracking and managing a session through the 5 dimensions of MCDT.
Competence in providing psychoeducation about the MCD map and each of its components.
Capacity to guide clients through interventions that support their development of an integrated sense of self and the relationship competencies.
Our intention is to collaborate with you to design the final certification process. In the unforeseen event that the student and trainer are unable to determine a strategy that meets both of their needs in the certification process, the trainer acknowledges the power they hold along with the responsibility to ensure that certification is managed in a manner that protects the interest of potential future therapy clients. The trainer will provide a certification plan that includes strategies to to meet the students needs as much as they are able while also meeting the demonstration requirements as listed above.

MCD Therapy Supports Collective Human Evolution
Love is a communion of souls powered by continuous communication. Those blessed with a loving relationship naturally contribute to others. This is the progression; once we reach a critical mass of building personal trust with significant others, we reach out from that security and can work with others at our highest collective level.
The MCD community has created sacred offerings for the world so that we might enter into a synergistic collaboration in which all needs are included. We feel a solidarity of purpose as we seek to inspire and uplift the potential in all human hearts.
